Naming rights for the National Stadium? That’s a possibility, says the new Malaysia Stadium Corporation (MSC) chairman, Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz.
However, Anita Azrina said that depends on MSC finding a “suitable” sponsor committed for the long term.
Anita Azrina was named MSC chairman for a two-year term starting today, with Datuk Seri Windsor Paul John as her deputy.
“It is one of the things under consideration. It is not a case of selling the naming rights to the highest bidder. We must ensure we have the right partner, as we are talking about the National Stadium,” Anita Azrina told Twentytwo13.
“It must be sustainable, with long-term financing — not for a year or two. The Axiata Arena is a perfect example of how a long-term partnership has worked. We have many plans in the pipeline. The key is to be self-sustainable and not depend on government funding.
“I have been involved with MSC for the past two years. The priority is to ensure the facilities are in top condition, especially as Malaysia will host the SEA Games in 2027. Kuala Lumpur Sports City will be pivotal to that.”
Anita Azrina, who is also on the board of the Sepang International Circuit, said there are plans for other forms of sponsorship and collaboration to ensure MSC’s facilities are well-managed.
This would allow MSC to focus on the commercial aspect — attracting more people and companies to lease the venue for events and concerts.
Formerly Petronas Group’s senior general manager of strategic communications, Anita Azrina said MSC is looking at technological innovations to bring Kuala Lumpur Sports City into the future.
“There is always room for improvement. What works today may not work in five to 10 years. We need to look at the ticketing system, for example,” said Anita Azrina, who is also the founding mentor of the Public Relations Practitioners Society of Malaysia (PRactitioners).
Anita Azrina, who replaced Datuk Hans Isaac after his contract ended today, brings a strong background in sports and sponsorship from her time at Petronas, making her the ideal person to lead MSC.
“Chairman, chairperson or chairwoman? I don’t mind being called chairman,” said Anita Azrina with a laugh.
“It is a great honour for me, and I would like to thank (Youth and Sports Minister) Hannah Yeoh for believing in me. Sports and sponsorship are part of my DNA, and I hope to show what I’m capable of with MSC.
“I have a great team for the next two years with my deputy, Windsor, an experienced administrator.”
